When observing Goalkeepers in action there are four main areas to consider
Â
Personality
Technical
Tactical
Physical
Â
**Obviously, the extent of their technical and tactical expertise will be influenced by their age and stage of development.
Â
It is important to realize that the art of Goalkeeping is about consistently keeping the ball out of the net, although this is the ultimate goal it does not analyze their performance; we need to break down the art of Goalkeeping into components.
Â
Personality
Â
Presence:Â How much is the Keeper in control rather than controlled by the situation?
Competitiveness:Â How much does it mean for the Keeper to Keep the Ball out of the net?
Concentration:Â Does the Keeper live every moment of the game?
Ability to recover from mistakes:Â Unless the keeper has the mental strength to handle mistakes and put them behind him, he will never be successful.
Â
Technical
Â
1.    Footwork: How quickly does the keeper move to get into position?
2.    Handling/catching: Does the keeper have reliable strong, safe (soft) hands?
3.     Shot Stopping: Is he difficult to beat? What is his range?
4.    Positioning: Does he make the difficult look easy?
5.    1v1 situations: Does he have the courage to dive at feet?
6.    Crosses: Does he make good decisions coupled with good technique?
7.    Distribution:   Is he comfortable throwing, kicking from hands and feet?
8.    Dealing with the Back pass: Is he composed, does he make good decisions
and pass accurately?
Â
Tactical
Â
1.    Supporting the Defense: Does he take up good supporting positions when his
team is in and not in possession?
2.    Communication: Is it effective? When (early)? What (relevant and to the
point), How (Clear with authority)?
  Â
 Physical
Â
1.    Size: Is he tall for his age? Short? Medium?
2.    Speed: Is he quick off his line? Can he move from post to post? Does he cover
the whole box?
3.    Agility: Is he coordinated? Can he move in all directions? Can he jump?
4.    Strength: Does he have upper body strength? Does he have lower body
strength? This is by age-appropriate scouting only*
